Gender, Institution Types, and Socioeconomic Factors Responsible for Antisocial Behaviours in Higher Education Institutions

The aim of this study is to establish the incidence and prevalence of certain social problems in higher education institutions. A descriptive research of the survey type was employed in this research. The study was conducted in the Department of Science and Technical Education, Faculty of Education, Adekunle Ajasin University in Nigeria from January 2011 to October 2012. 560 undergraduates, who were randomly selected from one state institution and one federal institution, took part in this study. To guide this study, three research questions were raised. A self-constructed research instrument, which was tagged “Types and Prevalence of Problems in Higher Institutions”, was used to gather information via the student affairs units. Descriptive statistics, such as frequency counts and percentages, were used to analyze the data collected. Findings in this study revealed that all various forms of vices such as gender harassment; examination malpractices; and social ills such as cultism, murder, robbery, and drug abuse were found in both federal and state institutions. Female students fall victim to sexual harassment more often than male students. Students from a high socioeconomic status were recorded as more prone to social ills than their counterparts from medium and low socioeconomic status. The study concludes that gender, institutional types, and socioeconomic factors ought to be considered in solving social problems among undergraduates.

Dr. Oluwatelure is a lecturer in the Department of Science and Technical Education in Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba. She worked in secondary schools and the college of education before her appointment to the university in 2001. Dr. Oluwatelure has taught integrated science and biology to all categories of students for the past thirty-three years. She is particularly interested in improving the studies of general science and biology in order to promote family life, as well as environmental concerns for all learners. She is currently the acting head of her department.
